*How do I know if the fabric I have ordered is in stock?
Our site is now equipped with an inventory control system, which tells you how much fabric we have on hand, based on the orders that have come into the site. There is a notation which reads "Quantity on Hand" for each item on the web site which is in the inventory control system. It is the best indication of how much yardage is on a bolt or how many patterns, books, or notions we have available at any moment. If it says "0" and you really want that item, I would recommend adding it to your order anyway, just in case the inventory control system is off by a yard or two, however, don't count on receiving that item! We don't want heartbroken customers!
We usually have between 75 and 100 orders waiting to be filled at any one time, so we hope you can understand that it would be impossible for us to tell you what is available until we get up to your order in our order book. If you are ordering a popular or hard to find item, it is best to place your order on line and give us instructions in the special request box of the order form about what we should do if we don't have what you need. We will EMAIL you if there is a discrepancy, if you wish, but it is best to give us specific instructions regarding minimum acceptable quantities to ship on each fabric.
Please place your order on line and resist the temptation to call us about fabric availability if at all possible. EMAIL US if you are really desperate about availability and we will see what information we can share with you.
*What if I order something and it is not in stock? Is my credit card charged?
No. Nothing is charged to your account until it is shipped. You place your order on line, we retrieve your order form from our secure server, take the order form to the shop and pull the items for your order. Once we assess that we have enough to cover your request, we put your charge through, then cut any fabrics and ship your items. Appropriate shipping fees will apply, but they are generally the same fees you see on your order estimate.
In the event that we cannot satisfy your order, your order is canceled. No charges have been made to your account. If we have only a part of your order and you wish to have us send what we have, your order is edited appropriately and you are charged only for what we send plus the cost of shipping. We contact you before shipping if we feel any shortages will differ from your instructions on your order form.
*What is the minimum amount of fabric I can order?
1/2 yard on regularly priced and sale fabrics, UNLESS fabric is marked $5.00 per yard with a one yard minimum. You may enter decimals (.5) or fractions (1/2) in the quantity box.
*If I order a small quantity, do I still have to pay the shipping and handling fee quoted on my invoice?
Yes. You may select a shipping method at the time you place your order by clicking on the button for the appropriate carrier (UPS, USPS PRIORITY, or Foreign). When selecting USPS, we use Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation ONLY (unless you need express mailing) We offer a rate of $5.80 FOR DOMESTIC ORDERS for items under $50 if you click on the "US DOMESTIC" button when you get to the order form. Once you go over $50 worth of merchandise, appropriate shipping fees will apply. We know on line customers hate to pay shipping fees (so do we!), so take time to consolidate your orders. Consider shipping several orders together with a friend or two. If you fill your packages to capacity, the shipping is really quite reasonable.
For FOREIGN orders, we offer flat rate mailers to Canada for $11.95, and to all other foreign countries where priority mail is available, a small order (under $50) can be shipped in a Flat Rate Mailer for $13.95.
Oversized items which cannot fit into flat rate or standard mailing sizes may require additional postage.
*What should I do if I don't want to put my credit card on-line?
We use a secure server, and we are a small family run business, so no one has access to your credit information except us. No one else. If you are still uncomfortable with using a secure web site, then please place your order on-line and submit it without any credit information. Then call 914-402-5677 between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm Eastern Standard Time Monday through Saturday and give us your credit information. When you call, please have the order confirmation number that was e-mailed to you at the time you placed your order, and give us that along with your credit/debit information. If you wish, we can keep that information on file here, and you can just ask us to use the card on file when you place subsequent orders. In our opinion, the secure server of our site is more secure than the mail or the phone, but we do understand your security concerns and we are willing to work with you so that you feel comfortable with the ordering process.
*Do you accept personal checks as payment?
NO! If you do not have access to a credit card, you may place an order on line, print it and send it in the mail along with a cashiers check or money order. The disadvantage to that method of payment is that the items you have ordered may be sold out by the time your order arrives in the mail. We do not set aside, save or mail anything until your payment has been received and deposited in the bank. Sorry, no exceptions.
*What should I do if I am not happy with my order, or there is an error?
PLEASE E-MAIL US IMMEDIATELY! Most of our customers are thrilled with their packages, but we are human, and we may make a mistake. If so, we want to know about it. We will make arrangements to correct the problem if you just send us an e-mail explaining what the problem is.
*How long will it take my order to arrive?
That depends! We are in New York and we are shipping from the East Coast. Obviously, if you are on the West Coast, it will take longer. UPS deliveries will take 5-6 business days from the day of shipping. If you need your fabric more quickly, PLEASE E-MAIL us and let us know. We will be happy to make arrangements for faster delivery and will let you know if any additional charges are necessary. Please allow extra time if you are ordering lots of assortments, fat quarters or kits, which may need to be custom cut for your order.
What is the difference between brushed homespun, brushed cotton, and a screen printed flannel?
We receive lots of questions regarding flannel and brushed homespun. Our site carries three different types of flannels. There are screen prints, brushed cottons, and brushed homespuns. Here's a bit about each:
SCREEN PRINTS: Here a flannel base or griege good is used and a pattern is screen printed onto the flannel base. Often the base is white, or can be yellow or any color the manufacturer feels will best pick up the colors of the screen print. So, what you see on the back of the fabric may not necessarily "match" the colors used on the front. These flannels are usually thick and luxurious, and the fact that the back of the fabric does not necessarily match the front is of no consequence with traditional piecing techniques. If you are using these flannels for a raggy edge quilt, the background color may show a bit. To some quilters, that does not matter. It is your personal taste and decision.
BRUSHED COTTONS: Moda produces the brushed cotton flannels on our site. A fabric is screen printed in the traditional manner on cotton greige goods or base, and then the fabric is brushed to bring up a nap, creating a flannel texture. There is a right side and "wrong" side to these flannels, but there is not usually a big discrepancy in the color between back and front. They are not usually as heavy as screen printed cotton, there is not much shrinkage, and they are incredibly soft to the touch, almost like a suede. They can be used for traditional piecing and will work with more intricate patterns since their loft is not as great. I would recommend using a very scant seam allowance if you choose to use a pattern with lots of varied shapes, and you should check your piecing for accuracy often as you go along.
BRUSHED HOMESPUNS:Homespun fabrics are made by weaving different colored threads into a pattern. It is ALWAYS a plaid, and it is reversible. The back looks exactly like the front, with no variation in color. When one side is brushed, it takes on a flannel nap and is flannel on one side and cotton on the other. These fabrics can be used with cottons in a cotton quilt by placing the non-brushed side out, and with flannels in a flannel quilt by placing the brushed side out. They make excellent "raggy" or fringed quilts because they fringe beautifully into soft colored threads, and they contain a wonderful variety of color.
How wide are the fabrics on your site?
All fabrics on our site are 44" wide (standard quilting weight and width) unless stated otherwise next to the fabric description. We usually calculate yardage based on 40 usable inches of fabric, which allows for the removal of selvages (which should never be left on pieces that go into quilts) and any possible shrinkage.
Do you recommend pre-washing fabrics?
That is an individual decision, and should be considered with each project. If I am using strong colors that are notorius for "bleeding" I will pre-wash. If I am using screen printed flannels I will often pre-wash, however not if I am making a raggy edged quilt. When I do pre-wash, I do not soap the fabric. I merely wet it, spin it in the washer, and dry it until nearly dry. Then I smooth out the fabric and re-fold it as it came off the bolt to prepare for rotary cutting. I spray starch cottons before I cut them to give them some body. I always pre-wash backing fabric. A large backing fabric may shrink considerably and ruin a quilt. Remember if you are concerned about bleeding, fabrics only bleed when they are wet. So I take care to dry my quilts quickly after washing. Never allow them to sit in a washer or tub once the water has drained. Never hang them on a line. If I have a quilt with dark colors or unstable fabrics I will put them in a dryer to dry them quickly and I will hand dry those unstable fabrics with a blow dryer to make sure they don't have a chance to run. Let common sense dictate the use and care of your fabrics and quilts and you will not have a problem. All the fabrics on our web site are of the highest quality and are intended for quilts. You should not encounter problems with bleeding or excessive shrinkage.
Do you accept returns?
We would like our customers to always be 100% satisfied with their orders. We do accept returns on some items within 30 days from the invoice date. Refunds are issued once the items are received in our warehouse, and we do not give refunds for shipping charges. The cost of shipping items back to us is also at the customer’s expense. Sale items and cut yardage may not be returned. All returns must be in their original condition and packaging and must not have any odor to them (including smoke). We will not offer refunds on any items we receive that have an odor to them.
